Intallation View

영상은 최초의 현대적 통신방식인 세마포어 Semaphore 신호체계를 바탕으로 만들어진 수기신호를 통해 ‘Dear Mum, you always wondered what I’m doing. Here is my art work. I’ll probably keep doing this.’

A tower stands 20 meters high. Erected on top with a distance of 10-15 metres in between, are two indicators reminiscent of human arms. On 2 March, 1791, at 11:00 am, the sentence, "si vous réussissez, vous serez bientôt couverts de gloire" (if you succeed, I will feel glorious), was successfully sent between Brulon and Parce, about 16 kilometres apart.

The front door closes. The upward motions are set directional movements. The movements are edited and become the journey of the video. From the subway to the bus, from one bus onto another. This horizontal movement appears to have no resistance to 'the history of technology and knowledge'. At the bus terminus is a gigantic transport machine for vertical movement. The steel wires that support this machine connect the tension between the start and end point of the journey with a gentle curve leading up to the mountain peak. The enormous body of the machine moves over the long extended steel wire. The movement accelerates. With a sense of speed to the top, the mechanical movement of the cable cart easily disregards the difficult vertical journey up the mountain. The movement accelerates. Concentrating on adapting to the change in atmospheric pressure and temperature at the mountaintop, the appropriate location is considered. The ideal location is where there would be no disturbance from others, with the possibility to utilise the height of the location and access the internet network. From the mobile phone, the previously saved data is searched for. The file is selected and the ‘send’ button is pressed. The linguistic form of gestures becomes data, transmitted from a high place on a flat, to a place far away.

This work is a video of the artist sending a text message to his mother from Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. The artist reaches his destination through ordinary means of transport and transmits the previously recorded video to his mother. The work is based on the semaphore signal system, the first modern communication method. Using semaphore signals, the artist delivers the short message, "Dear Mum, you always wondered what I’m doing. Here is my art work. I’ll probably keep doing this."
